The final performances will be judged at iSTARS Performing Arts Centre on Saturday Feb. 26th 2011.
Grand prize in each of the four categories will be a master recording of each winning song, produced at iSTARS studios.
Finalists will be invited to sing on the master recording and video of “Peace of Many Pieces” written by: Robert Priest, and Allen Booth.

Whether you are a singer fronting your own band, a producer working on an album, or an engineer recording some overdubs, you are likely to encounter woodwind instruments in your travels, either as a featured instrument or as part of an ensemble like an orchestra. The most common woodwinds include the saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone), as well as flute and clarinet. Other colorful but less common woodwinds include the oboe and English horn, recorders (like you may have played in elementary school), Irish whistle, and piccolo.

Why use Wind Instruments?

A featured wind instrument can complete your song, or send it in a different musical direction. A saxophone can make a gentle ballad more bluesy or sexy. A clarinet can make a song sound more whimsical or comedic, like Dixieland music. A flute can “soften” a heavier, edgier song. Using any wind or brass instrument in the “hook line” of your song’s introduction can make that song so instantly identifiable that it stands a better chance of being a hit -so choose your instrument with care!

Cummunicating with Wind Players

It’s important to be able to communicate your ideas to the musicians who play these instruments, whether it’s in a verbal or written form, so that the end result is consistent with your musical vision.

If you are working in an aural environment (no charts, nothing written), you should be able to sing or play the ideas you want to hear reproduced by the wind instrument, or have it recorded on a demo recording for the musician to listen to. The same applies to brass instruments such as trumpet, trombone, and French horn.  If you want to have written parts for your “horn players” (as they are commonly called), you need to study orchestration so that you know what they need to see on paper, or hire someone to do it for you. This is not something you can “fake”. You need to study it.

A professional wind player is capable of providing more ideas than you can possibly use,  so know WHY you are using him/her. Some examples: hook line featured instrument, instrumental solo in the middle of the song, “conversation” with the singer. Woodwinds in pop music are usually used sparingly, otherwise they draw the focus away from the lead vocalist.

In a world of distortion guitars, grooving drums, and sparkly keyboards, it’s easy to forget that there are fabulous instruments that convey huge emotion because living breathing humans breathe LIFE into the music when they play, whether it’s on stage or in the studio.
